My name is John Burkett, principal of Advicepoint Business Consulting..
By academic training I have a degree in Psychology. My commercial background is in Sales and Marketing in the IT industry. In 1991 I set up a business in the UK which is now a small public company group in which I still retain a significant shareholding.
Developing this business, and going though all the ups and downs that a business owner manager goes though, led me to understand how it’s necessary to make the sometimes difficult transition from ‘start up entrepreneur’ to ‘business manager’ as a business grows and develops. To help me deal with this I put myself though an MBA with one of the leading business schools in the UK – so I like to think that I have both real life experience as well as the business theory behind me!
I am also an Associate of the Institute for Independent Business, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Member of the Australian Institute of Management Consultants.
My experiences with owner managed businesses, in both the UK and Australia, has convinced me that many owner managers can benefit significantly by taking the time out to talk to someone they can trust to give unbiased and independent advice about their business.
I also believe that the IIB Business Support Programme is the best mechanism available to give to small and medium sized business owner managers the support and advice they need. I think the IIB’s own tag line says it all ‘Practical Advice That Works’.
